“Since January 1st, 2016, the Russian Federation has
abandoned the free trade regime with Ukraine on a unilateral basis. It has
imposed an embargo on supplies of some Ukrainian food products. As a result of
such official Moscow’s policy, the turnover between the Russian Federation and
Ukraine has reduced almost by 65% or by more than $1 billion in the previous
year compared to 2014 and amounted to nearly $575 million.
However, for the
reason of expanded export geographical coverage, the market’s diversification
allowed the Ukrainian agricultural sector to take the loss of the Russia’s
market relatively painlessly”, Oleksii Pavlenko, the Minister of
Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, stressed in his report at the Verkhovna
Rada of Ukraine.
The Minister reported that the volume of export of the Ukrainian
agricultural products to the Russian Federation had reduced by 68.4% (or $672
million less) to $310 million. Thus, the share of the Russian Federation in the
total export of Ukraine has reduced from almost 6% in 2014 and to 2% in 2015.
“The export decreasing is observed in practically the whole range of trade
items. The export supplies of some items have completely broken off, including
condensed milk, eggs, cereals, oilseeds (mainly of soy and sunflower seeds),
sugar confectioneries, ready for use or canned products of fish and
crustaceans. The supplies of butter, beer and juice have decreased to the
minimal level”, the Minister stressed.
At the same time, the import of goods from the Russian Federation has
decreased by 58% (or $366 million less) to $264 million at the conclusion of 12
months of 2014.
“However, the Ministry has applied efforts to create all the necessary
conditions to ensure that agricultural products from the Russian Federation are
replaced by domestic and foreign products. The EU has become a major consumer
of Ukrainian agricultural products”, Oleksii Pavlenko summed up.
