Police revolution reaches Ukraine's central city of Poltava

Hundreds of new recruits swear oath of allegiance

The revolution in Ukrainian policing is continuing to spread across the country. At least 245 new patrol police officers have been sworn in at a ceremony in the central city of #Poltava. Among the new recruits there are more than 30 men who've served in eastern Ukraine fighting Russian-backed separatist forces. 50 recruits are female.

Officials are calling on the new officers to uphold the law and protect Ukrainian citizens. But Prime Minster Arseniy Yatsenyuk says changes within the law enforcement system mean nothing without the appointment of a new prosecutor general.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Ukrainian Prime Minister: "The public is demanding laws are abided by and our society is on the same side as the police. As the prime minster I'm demanding that courts are on the same side and the prosecution. And the prosecutor general, who needs to be appointed."

The latest recruits have big expectations to live up to. With the reboot of the police officials promise an end to the corruption which plagued the old Soviet-style system. The reform is one of the most visible undertaken in Ukraine since the country's pro-E.U. Maidan uprising two years ago. The new forces are modelled on their American counterparts. Poltava is the 16th Ukrainian city where the initiative has been launched.
