In the course of the
working trip to Lviv region, the President met with personnel of Cynological
training center of Lviv and Mostyska border troops.
The President
emphasized that modern challenges brought new tasks for the border guards.
"The main tasks are the fight against organized crime, illegal migration,
drug trafficking and smuggling. And events in Paris showed that the most
important task is the fight against terrorism," the Head of State
stressed.
The President informed
that the meeting with security forces had been held today to enhance security
in Ukraine and in this respect great responsibility rests with the border
guards.
"We are enhancing measures not only in Kyiv, Lviv and other cities
of Ukraine, but also in airports, infrastructure facilities, train stations and
on the state border," he said.
According to the
President, rights of Ukrainians to the visa-free travelling around Europe
depend on the border guards. "The work of the State Border Service must be
flawless for nobody to question the right of Ukrainians to travel to Europe
without visas. It is especially important in conditions of migration challenges
the EU is currently facing," Petro Poroshenko noted.
An important challenge
is the fight against corruption and smuggling, inter alia, in the ranks of the
border guards. "You should have zero tolerance to these crimes and
violations," Petro Poroshenko said. The President emphasized that recent
crash of helicopter transporting illegal migrants in Slovakia demonstrated the
need for enhance coordination with foreign border guards. The Head of State
also stressed that everyone must be responsible for corruption irrespective of
rank.
The President noted
that the government would continue working to improve security and equipment of
border guards. "The state will increase technological support of the
border service and raise social standards, among which the main priority is
decent allowance and gradual improvement of living conditions," Petro
Poroshenko said. Also, the border guards will get new equipment as a result of
cooperation with European and American partners.
The President thanked
the border guards for their service, particularly in the ATO area. "A new
image of the Ukrainian border guard full of patriotism, courage, honor, dignity
and courage was born in the east, where there is a war for our independence,
sovereignty and territorial integrity," the Head of State noted. Over 14
thousand border guards took part in the ATO area, 67 of them died. The
attendees honored the memory of the fallen heroes with a moment of silence.
The President presented
awards to 5 border guards and military flags to the border guards' units.
