Gay Marriage Case Becomes Lightning Rod for EU Court
U.S.-Romanian couple wants the European Court of Justice to rule that married gay couples have the same residence rights as straight couples
BRUSSELS—A court case over gay marriage has turned into a broader battle over the balance of powers between the European Union and its national governments.
Romanian citizen Adrian Coman and ClaiHamilton, an American, met in New York’s Central Park in 2002. Sixteen years later, their marriage has become a litmus test for the EU court system, pitting civil rights activists against socially conservative governments and mirroring fights that led to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling broadly legalizing same-sex marriage.
