It doped, dodged and lied — now Russia’s out

A state programme of cheating came crashing down with an Olympic ban. Our investigative team explains how it exposed the scandal


The leader of international athletics, Lord Coe, was stubbornly defiant on Friday when he announced the historic decision to exclude Russian track and field athletes from this year’s Rio Olympics, but his tone has changed considerably in the past year. 


In front of the world’s media he gave a meandering answer when asked whether the Russian ban was a belated admission that his organisation, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), had until now failed to tackle properly the endemic problem of drugs cheating.
