On May 8, Ukraine will honor the memory of the fallen in the Second World War; on May 9, Ukraine will celebrate the Victory with a march of military orchestras

This year, for the first time, Ukraine will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Victory over Nazism in Europe with other democratic states. On May 8 – the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation, on May 9 – the Victory Day, on September 2 – the 70th anniversary of end of the Second World War, as stated by Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Rostyslav Pavlenko.

On May 8, with the support of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine and the Institute of National Remembrance, a ceremony commemorating the victims of the World War II will be carried out in Kyiv.
In the morning of May 8, there will be a solemn session of Verkhovna Rada with participation of the President.

Official ceremony dedicated to the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation will begin at 22:00 with the speech of the Ukrainian President in the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. Then, there will be a memorial-artistic program “Voices of Heroes”.

At 23:01, the international action of remembrance “The First Minute of Peace” will be held. Then, the bowl “Fire of Glory” will be lighted. “It is a great pleasure for us to join the European tradition of celebrating the first minute of peace. 70 years ago, at 23:01, the Act of Military Surrender of the Third Reich entered into force,” member of the organization committee Yevhen Nishchuk explained.

The program of May 9 will be more intense. Official celebration will begin at 11:00 in the Park of Glory. After the ceremony of laying flowers to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a march of military orchestras will be held with participation of not only Ukrainian, but also foreign orchestras.

At 11:30, 500 recruits of the AFU will take the oath in the presence of the President of Ukraine. A solemn concert will start at 12:10.

“It is extremely important that Ukraine refuses from obsolete Soviet traditions. Today, these traditions are used against us by Russian propaganda. They help Russia encourage its country to immerse into the vortex of a new war – war against Ukraine,” Head of the Institute of National Remembrance Volodymyr Vyatrovych said. He has emphasized that Ukraine, unlike Russia, would not demonstrate aggression or military power, but honor the memory of the deceased.

“We are not going to compete with Russia in the scale of celebration and bring new planes to the parade. It is not the face of Ukraine. We must show the true character of Ukrainians – a peace-loving nation, which, however, can stand up for itself,” Yevhen Nishchuk emphasized.
