People who committed crime under the previous authorities must be brought to justice

President Petro Poroshenko emphasizes that people who committed crimes under the previous authorities must be brought to justice and those who are subject to the Law on Lustration must fulfill legislative requirements.

“My position is absolutely clear. Those who committed crimes under the previous authorities must be brought to justice. Those who are subject to the Law on Lustration must fulfill legislative requirements,” the Head of State said commenting on the question of journalists about the right of the current composition of judges of the Constitutional Court to consider the Law on Lustration.

The President believes Ukraine needs prompt and efficient renewal of judicial authorities. For this end, the President’s Decree has established the Constitutional Commission, which includes representatives of different political forces in the Parliament, lawyers and Government officials.
The President reminded that the decision of the Commission on constitutional amendments on judicial reform had been submitted for public discussion and consideration by the Venice Commission that would assess compliance of the proposed judicial reform of Ukraine with requirements and criteria of the Council of Europe. “I hope this conclusion will be positive,” the President said.

Following the conclusion by the Venice Commission, the President will submit draft constitutional amendments to the Parliament. “This judicial reform should provide for the renewal of judicial corps,” the Head of State noted.
