President Petro Poroshenko called his meeting
with Pope Francis “very touching”. Meetings in the Vatican confirmed the
interest in Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, as stated by the President.
After the meeting with Pope Francis, President
Petro Poroshenko noted: “The main conclusion of the meeting is the remark by
His Holiness that we always remember and pray for Ukraine. After visiting the
Vatican, I was convinced once again that the truth is with us, the Lord is with
us and His prayers are with Ukraine,” Petro Poroshenko said.
The President informed that substantial
attention had been paid to the assistance in the establishment of peace on the
Ukrainian land. Pope Francis is well aware of the details of the Minsk plan and
considers it the only way to bring peace to Ukraine, as stated by Petro
Poroshenko. “The steps made by the Church today are very important for us,” the
Head of State emphasized.
According to the President, he addressed Pope Francis
with a request to accelerate beatification of Metropolitan Andriy Sheptytsky.
The Pope said that much had been done for that already. It was also informed
that the procedure of beatification of Bishop Stepan Chmil had also been
started.
The Head of State invited Pope Francis to visit
Ukraine. The invitation was accepted.
Following the meeting with Cardinal Secretary of
State of the Holy See Pietro Parolin, the President said: “We’ve heard the
words of support for Ukraine. Ukrainian state remains a priority in the prayers
and the work of the Vatican”.
The Head of State invited the representatives of
the Vatican to attend the events in the memory of the 30th anniversary
of the Chernobyl disaster and the 75th anniversary of the Babi
Yar tragedy.
In the course of the meeting, the parties also
discussed interpersonal contacts. Pietro Parolin was touched by the heroic deed
of Ukrainian Anatoliy Korol who was killed in Naples trying to stop the
