The European Commission has started technical work to assess the readiness of Ukraine for a visa-free regime with the EU. However, the political decision of the European Council is more important.
This has been stated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on Wednesday at a press conference on revision of the European Neighbourhood Policy in Brussels.
"We have just started with a group of commissioners to discuss the prospects of the summit in Riga [of the Eastern Partnership on May 20-21]. On Friday and Saturday, the technical assessment will be continued at the informal meeting of foreign ministers. After that, political signals will be prepared for this summit," Mogherini said, when asked about the prospects of Ukraine to obtain a visa-free regime with the EU at the Riga summit of the Eastern Partnership.
In turn, the European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn noted that, in accordance with the existing procedure, even a positive assessment of the Commission shall be reviewed and approved by the European Council at the level of heads of state and government.
