President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko thanked Moldovan partners for a firm position in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence. “I want to remind that Moldova has firmly backed our independence in March 2014 by voting for the UN GA Resolution and in December 2016 by not only supporting the Resolution on the situation with human rights in the occupied Crimea, but also being a co-author of the abovementioned Resolution,” the President said.
The Head of State noted that Ukraine and Moldova are not just neighboring countries – our nations are united by strong cultural and historic roots that stood the test of centuries.
“Unfortunately, our common region has become the arena of clash of two ideological concepts. The first of them is democratic values, human rights and move to the future. The second one is totalitarianism, dictatorship and return to the past,” the President said in the press statement following the negotiations with Prime Minister of Moldova Pavel Filip.
According to Petro Poroshenko, we have witnessed the attempts to inflame interethnic and interhuman hatred in the area between Donbas and the banks of the Dniester. “It is hard to imagine what this fire would reach if it wasn’t for the fortitude and heroism of the Ukrainian warriors,” he added.
The Head of State also noted that a quarter of century ago Moldova faced similar challenges having lost part of its sovereign territory. “Now we see persistent attempts to impose to Moldova and Ukraine such formats of reintegration that will allow making decisions fateful for the fate of our nations from outside,” the President emphasized.
“I would like to underline that these attempts are doomed to failure. Ukraine and Moldova must and will be restored within their sovereign and internationally recognized borders. I want to emphasize once again: Crimea is Ukraine, just as Donbas. The whole democratic global community shares and supports this position. And those who do not agree stand on the other side of civilizational dimension," Petro Poroshenko said.
The President informed that he discussed with the Prime Minister of Moldova the interaction and history of the attempts to restore Moldovan territorial integrity. He noted that Russian troops are still deployed in Moldova. And even the amendments to the national legislation on neutral status of the state, as well as respective constitutional amendments of Moldova in 1994 have not brought the results.
“Only decisive united actions will help restore Moldovan territorial integrity. I would like to underscore the position of Ukraine that supports and will do everything for the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of Moldova to be inviolable,” the President said.
The Head of State emphasized that Ukraine will actively and resolutely work, inter alia, in “5+2” format.
In his turn, Prime Minister of Moldova Pavel Filip informed that the parties discussed in details the process of peaceful settlement of the conflict in Transnistria in “5+2” format. He also thanked for the firm and consistent position of Ukraine in support of Moldovan territorial integrity.
“Together with Ukraine, we must be an example of compliance with international law in our region,” Pavel Filip said and emphasized that the history in a complex geopolitical region has proved that our regional solidarity promotes joint struggle with obstacles on the track of preserving territorial integrity of the two countries.
The Moldovan Prime Minister expressed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and reiterated clear position of Moldova as regards Crimea: “The Republic of Moldova recognizes and complies with Ukraine’s territorial integrity and independence”.
Pavel Filip emphasized that Moldova is willing to support and assist Ukraine in its struggle for independence and territorial integrity.
