Today we pay tribute to a woman who had the courage to say what others may not have dared, and to stand up to injustice. Anna Politkovskaya was a staunch defender of human rights, a champion of words, and a patron of truth. Her death was and still is a tragic loss to freedom of speech in Russia and Russian journalism; her words will long be admired.
The European Union will always stand up for and support freedom of expression, in Russia and around the world. As we have consistently said over the past decade, those who ordered this murder must be brought to justice.
