New U.S. ambassador to arrive in Ukraine by Independence Day in Kyiv

New United States Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch will arrive in Kyiv before August 24.

"I talked to Marie Yovanovitch. She is considering arriving in Ukraine before the celebration [of Ukraine's Independence Day on August 24] and will have an opportunity to celebrate the 25th anniversary of independence with us," the Ukrainian Ambassador in Washington Valery Chaly told reporters in Kyiv on Monday.

The former U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt left Ukraine after three years of service on August 18, 2016.

U.S. President Barack Obama said earlier that he intended to appoint Yovanovitch the new ambassador to Ukraine. In turn, Pyatt may be appointed to the post of the U.S. ambassador to Greece.

Yovanovitch served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs and worked in Ukraine for three years (2001-2004), where she was deputy U.S. Ambassador and charge d'affaires.
