Ukrainian Orthodox Christians celebrate Holy Trinity Day on June 19

People decorate homes with birch, oak, maple twigs

Today, on June 19, Ukrainian Orthodox Christians mark one of the 12 major Christian holidays of the year - the Holy Trinity Feast or Pentecost which comes on the 50th day after Easter and on the 10th day after the Ascension.

On this day the Holy Church remembers the Holy Spirit descending upon the disciples in tongues of fire.

Pentecost is a double feast. The first day of Pentecost is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and the second day focuses on the Holy Spirit.

On the eve, people decorate their houses with greenery, prepare holiday dinner and invite guests. All Orthodox churches are adorned with birch, lilac, oak, and maple twigs - they epitomize the soul renewal of the soul.

The Trinity is believed to symbolise a nature 'coming to life' - everything blooms and the air is filled with bright colours and flavours.
