Deputy Head of the Odesa Regional State Administration for Investment and Development Sasha Borovik has declared his resignation due to the new law on state service, which came into effect on May 1, 2016.
"On May 1, a new law on state service came into effect. The law bans state officials to have any citizenship other than Ukrainian. I has never concealed that I'm a citizen of European Union. I'm grateful to the German government, which under my request made an exception for me in view of the ban on dual citizenship existing in Germany for me to work in Ukraine during a transformation period. I was very good in finding my niche, and during the last year I have been working with the most interesting team of the state in one of the most important and complicated of its regions," Borovik wrote on Facebook page on Wednesday.
He expressed a regret that "Ukrainian law contains this ban" since it is in Ukraine's interest that Ukrainian diaspora can help to their native state without any bureaucratic obstacles, especially "if these are our compatriots with good education and experience of life in EU to where Ukraine aspired to."
"Today I'm leaving state service and suspend my duties as deputy governor of Odesa region. Meanwhile, I remain his advisor and now I'm able to concentrate on the work at the Odesa City Council, to which I was elected by 75,000 residents of Odesa, where I remain one only independent deputy," Borovik said.
He said would seek to be an alternative to Odesa mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov and step up his political activities.
Borovik said that without combating corruption it would be impossible to involve investors "with serious capital" since he expects support from Odesa Regional State Administration Head Mikheil Saakashvili, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. He urged Poroshenko to shake up prosecution agencies and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) office in Odesa region.
He also said that within the last year he earned UAH 15,300 as state official and would donate the money to those involved in the anti-terror operation.
