President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko held negotiations with Prime Minister of Japan Shinzō Abe in the course of the official visit to Japan.
"We will coordinate our actions within the UN Security Council, WTO and other international organizations," the Head of State said following the negotiations.
The President reaffirmed unwavering support of Ukraine for Japan's aspiration to acquire the status of a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
The Head of State noted that Japan had marked the fifth anniversary of Fukushima nuclear disaster on March 11. On April 26, Ukraine will mark the thirtieth anniversary of Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
"I would like to express profound gratitude to Japan, which helped our state in the issue of overcoming the Chernobyl disaster. Ukraine was also among the first countries who helped Japan. We have reaffirmed our willingness to cooperate on liquidation of nuclear and other man-made disasters in the framework of respective bilateral Committee," the President emphasized.
In his turn, Prime Minister Shinzō Abe reminded that Japan and Ukraine had become non-permanent members of the UN Security Council in 2016. "We must be responsible in order to fulfill the tasks. We will coordinate positions to maintain security in the international arena," he said.
Shinzō Abe noted Japan was interested in developing relations with Ukraine. "Ukraine is our partner. We share the same values - freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law," he stressed.
The Prime Minister of Japan assures that his country would keep supporting Ukraine's efforts aimed to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. Japan will allocate additional EUR 3.5 million for the construction of nuclear fuel storage in Ukraine.
