Prosecutorial “immunity” has been abolished – President about special
operation in the Prosecutor General’s Office
Senior officials of the Prosecutor General’s Office and Security Service
of Ukraine reported to the President on special operation against corruption in
central apparatus of the Prosecutor General’s Office and Prosecutor’s Office of
Kyiv region that ended up with detention of the First Deputy Head of the
Investigation Department and Deputy Prosecutor of Kyiv region.
The President praised the work of security officials and noted that he
demands further decisive struggle against corruption. “Prosecutorial “immunity”
has been abolished. Corrupt officials must be brought to liability. I think
that it is a good start for the reformed public prosecution, which has recently
established a special department on struggle against corruption among
prosecutors,” he emphasized.
“Now we must keep on eliminating corruption in supreme state bodies,”
the Head of State said.
The President noted that he would keep the investigation of the given
case under his personal control.
Acting Prosecutor General – First Deputy Prosecutor General Volodymyr
Huzyr informed that the abovementioned persons were detained in the morning of
July 5. “In the course of the house-check, a lot of questions emerged about
huge sums of money in the national and foreign currency, especially in
comparison to the salary of civil servants. They were announced suspects.
Today, it will be defined whether there is enough evidence to impose the
strictest preventive measures in this context,” he informed.
Head of the Security Service Vasyl Hrytsak informed that in the
framework of the operation, the Security Service and Prosecutor General’s
Office implemented a series of investigative actions against corruption among
prosecutors. “We were responsible for operational maintenance and support of
the investigative team. As a result of the investigation, substantial evidence
of criminal activity has been collected,” the Head of the Security Service
noted adding that it goes about cosmic sums.
“It is great that the Prosecutor General’s Office initiates purification
in its ranks. I am confident that such corrupt officials are present in other
state bodies as well. We promised to fight corruption and we will make
everything to report on the results to the Ukrainian nation,” he added.
