No diplomatic efforts will ever change Vladimir Putin's desire to describe the United States as Russia's enemy on the basis of the conflict, which he has sparked in Ukraine.
Former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul (2011-2014) expressed such an opinion in an interview with the Voice of America, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
"I think it is in Putin's interest to describe us as the enemy. So, no amount of diplomacy will ever change that," McFaul said.
In this regard, he noted that Putin is not interested in resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine, as it serves his interest. According to McFaul, the Russian leader prefers the open-ended, low grade military confrontation in Ukraine, since this situation complicates the functioning of the Ukrainian government. McFaul expressed an opinion that the situation in the future would remain unchanged.
When asked about what Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and other officials in Moscow have described as the United States' "overt anti-Russian propaganda," McFaul said "the United States has not been involved in activities directly challenging Putin's government, which he said would be counterproductive."
