Ukrainian President enacted the decision of the National Security and Defense Council to terminate the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and Russia

President Petro Poroshenko signed the Decree "On the Decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine dated September 6, 2018 on the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation".

In accordance with the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, the proposals of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on the suspension of the validity of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation signed on May 31, 1997 were supported.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine must declare to the Russian Federation the intention of Ukraine to terminate the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation signed on May 31, 1997 in accordance with Article 40 of this Treaty, and submit the draft Law of Ukraine on termination of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation for consideration by the President of Ukraine in accordance with the established procedure.

Also, in accordance with the decision of the National Security and Defense Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must inform the UN, the OSCE and other international organizations about Ukraine's intention to terminate the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation signed on May 31, 1997 and grounds for termination.

As the Representative of the President in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, People's Deputy of Ukraine Iryna Lutsenko noted during the meeting of the coordination council of leaders of factions and groups, "at the meeting of the National Security and Defense Council, the position of the state was agreed regarding the non-prolongation of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation”.

According to her, by September 30, the Russian Federation will have been informed by the note of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and the President will submit to the Parliament an appropriate draft law in accordance with Article 24 of the Law of Ukraine "On the International Treaties of Ukraine".
