China's Low Crime Rate: Cultural Factors
Going deeper into China’s low crime rates, and the cultural factors that result in lower crime, we can identify a few cultural aspects that seem to have the highest impact. Confucianism emphasizes an individual’s role within the social order duty to family, and reverence for authority. Buddhism teaches that meaning is found in material belongings and encourages individuals to seek happiness within. Another major aspect of Chinese culture is the concept of “face” or shame, and the idea that committing a crime brings a loss of face.
