EU envoys approved renewed sanctions on Russia because
of the Ukraine crisis yesterday after Britain urged a stiff response to
President Putin’s “game of divide and rule”.
Ambassadors agreed the decision in principle and it
will now go to ministers for formal approval, possibly on Friday, according to
sources in Brussels.
The EU introduced energy, financial and defence
sanctions against Russia in 2014 in response to its annexation of Crimea and
its military intervention in eastern Ukraine. The measures will be extended for
six months from July.
