An American in Paris, or Trump in Notre Dame

Donald Trump at the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral on December 7? Sacré bleu! It appears Paris is preparing not just for the triumphant restoration of its beloved Gothic masterpiece but for an equally intricate spectacle: the meeting of three dramatically different leaders under one historic roof.
President Macron promised to resurrect the cathedral after the devastating fire of 2019, and now, true to his word, the spire stands tall once more. The President-elect of the United States and the President of Ukraine will be there to witness the moment, and possibly to reshape the geopolitical stage.
The guest list, however, has drawn as much attention as the event itself. Donald Trump, a man who once questioned why the U.S. even bothered with NATO, will sit in the same pews as Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the face of modern resistance against authoritarianism. Macron, playing the consummate host, will shuttle between the two for private talks at the Elysée Palace. A balancing act, indeed—worthy of any high-wire artist at the Cirque de Paris.
What might unfold from these tête-à-têtes is anyone’s guess. Will the atmosphere resemble Edouard Manet’s serene The Luncheon on the Grass or the fiery prelude to St. Bartholomew’s Day?
Trump and Zelenskyy are known for breaking molds, and Macron, with his penchant for grand gestures, might just steer them toward an impromptu roundtable. Picture it: Trump’s trademark hyperbole, Zelenskyy’s sharp wit, and Macron’s philosophical musings, all under the shadow of Notre Dame’s spire.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The prelude to this meeting is already a study in contrasts. Trump’s camp continues its push for a frozen conflict in Ukraine, a polite euphemism for capitulation wrapped in “peace talks.” Ukraine, however, has made its stance crystal clear: NATO membership or bust.
A bouquet of vague “security guarantees,” like those offered under the Budapest Memorandum, holds about as much weight as a feather in the Parisian wind.
Adding to the mix, Lavrov and his ever-loyal messenger Carson have unleashed their usual torrent of disinformation, so predictable it hardly warrants a shrug. Yet, the fact that this meeting is even a possibility speaks volumes about Ukraine’s growing significance in European security discussions.
Will Trump be able to charm Zelenskyy into an agreement that fits neatly into his campaign soundbites? It seems unlikely. Zelenskyy, representing a nation forged in fire, will likely arrive armed with a bold counterproposal—something that underscores Ukraine’s resilience and its indispensable role in the West’s defense.
Notre Dame’s rebirth is a symbol of hope and renewal, but in the shadows of its stained-glass windows, a far grittier drama will unfold. If Macron manages to orchestrate even a sliver of progress, it will be a miracle to rival the cathedral’s reconstruction.
Glory to Ukraine! And may the bells of Notre Dame ring true for freedom and justice.
