USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN DEMINING THE TERRITORY OF UKRAINE

Artificial intelligence will help in humanitarian demining of the territory of Ukraine. The Ministry of Economy and the Palantir technology company, which specializes in big data analytics, signed a partnership agreement. The signing of the document took place in London as part of a working visit to Great Britain by the Ukrainian delegation led by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine — Minister of Economy Yulia Svyridenko.

"Humanitarian demining is the zero stage of Ukraine's recovery. Currently, 156,000 square kilometers of land are potentially contaminated, and more than 6 million Ukrainians are at risk. That is why the acceleration of humanitarian demining, in particular thanks to cooperation with technology companies such as Palantir, is an opportunity to save people's lives and start the reconstruction of Ukraine faster," said Yuliya Svyridenko during the signing of the document.

For his part, the executive vice president of Palantir in Great Britain and Europe Louis Mosley emphasized that the signed agreement will help save the lives of Ukrainians and strengthen the economy of Ukraine.

"Whether we're helping brave Ukrainian defenders resist Putin's aggression, supporting the resettlement of their loved ones, or helping the country's critically important demining program, Palantir stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine and its people," said Louis Mosley.

The agreement contains specific provisions on cooperation in the following areas:

digitization of humanitarian demining operations, automation of processes provided for by the National Mine Action Strategy for the period up to 2033;

expanding digital capabilities for coordination of land clearance and assessment, regional prioritization and risk management in mine action;

using an assistant based on the Palantir artificial intelligence platform (AIP) for decision-making in mine countermeasures.

The platform will work with large databases formed by structures related to the implementation of mine action measures, starting from local self-government bodies, regional authorities, ministries and departments and ending with mine action operators.

It is assumed that the databases will contain both permanent information, for example, an assessment of the economic efficiency of agricultural land, the proximity of contaminated areas to communications, etc., and operational information, which will be regularly updated. It is, in particular, about the survey data of the territories of the State Emergency Service, State Security Service, non-governmental operators, the number and condition of equipment, the presence of pyrotechnic units in specific areas, etc. Powered by Palantir AIP, the platform will analyze information and provide recommendations for process optimization. For example, it will be able to advise, taking into account all the data, how to most effectively clear a specific area - with the help of new demining methods, such as drones, or with the use of traditional methods. The ultimate goal is to clear the territory faster and at lower costs.

The pilot project of the platform was presented at the First International Donor Conference on Humanitarian Demining of Ukraine, which took place in Zagreb on October 11-12, 2023. Currently, the signed agreement is a new stage in the cooperation between the Ministry of Economy and Palantir.
