The Cost of ‘Justice’: Sexual Offence Complainants and Access to Personal Data

Monday last week saw the announcement of a new national policyrequiring criminal complainants to sign consent forms authorising detectives to access data in their mobile phones. Conveyed in a joint briefing by Metropolitan police assistant commissioner Nick Ephgrave and director of public prosecutions (DPP) Max Hill QC, the new policy is designed to ‘ensure all relevant lines of enquiry are followed’ and that any material that undermines the case for the prosecution or assists the case for the accused is detected and disclosed to the defence.  While the forms are not to be used solely for sexual offence complainants the use of the forms in these cases was a major focus of Monday’s briefing.  While the CPS noted that not all sexual offence complainants will be asked to divulge digital data it is likely, given that most sex crimes occur between parties who are known to each other, that a high proportion of those complaining will be asked to sign a consent form and hand over their phones and the data therein.

Following the robust objections of many rape survivors’ advocacy groups to the new policy, the CPS and police late last week invited victims’ groups to discuss their concerns about the new consent form.  Over the weekend, the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners took the unusual step of publicly objecting to the introduction of the consent form, labelling it a risk to public confidence in the criminal justice system.

The Favourite

The Favourite is a 2018 period black comedy film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara. It is a co-production by producers in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States. Filming took place at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, and at Hampton Court Palace in Hampton Court, Surrey, between March and May 2017.

The film premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on 30 August 2018, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress (for Colman). It was released in the United States on 23 November 2018 by Fox Searchlight Pictures, and in the United Kingdom and Ireland on 1 January 2019. It became a box-office success, grossing over $95 million on a $15 million budget.

Все еще действующий президент Украины Петр Порошенко обвинил на днях судебную власть в том, что она слишком быстро "переориентировалась" на его преемника Владимира Зеленского. Этим глава государства еще больше усилил тревогу, вызванную нынешним рассмотрением в Конституционном суде закона о люстрации. В социуме это мигом связали с вероятной отменой безвизового режима, что также добавило масла в огонь. Но на самом деле фактаж является следующим.

Во-первых, закон о люстрации (как бы ни сложилась его дальнейшая судьба) к безвизу отношения не имеет. Во-вторых, для реализации безвизового режима являются важными закон об электронном декларировании и закон о незаконном обогащении. Последний был признан неконституционным в феврале текущего года, то есть при президентстве Порошенко. И наконец, в-третьих, если отвлечься от послевыборного противостояния "Порошенко – Зеленский" и говорить именно о безвизе, то ему грозят и другие факторы, не касающиеся упомянутых выше. А теперь – обо всем по порядку.

Will the Russian sea swallow Ukraine?: How Russia’s policy of assimilation transformed over time

The Ukrianian-Russian conflict in the unusual shape of a hybrid war has been simmeringfor six years now. Society has grown weary and wants peace. The politicians linked to Russia use that desire pledgingto get peace with Vladimir Putin if they win this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections. 

Obviously, peace on Putin’s terms could come quickly. But what awaits us if we once again end up in the “brotherly” embrace of our neighbor? 

Forecasting the future is a dangerous thing. But there is a convincing answer to that question. One simply has to peek into the past in order to understand that we will have no future if the abovementioned scenario comes to life.

Little Russians or Ukrainians? 

When Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s state was dragged into the Russian tsardom, its autonomous rights were restricted, then abolished under Catherine the Great, while Ukrainian history was appropriated by Russia (with a helping hand of many Ukrainians).

Об этом говорится в официальном сообщении МВФ по результатам разговора, который состоялся в пятницу.

Statement by the IMF Managing Director on her Telephone Call with the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko

Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), held a telephone conversation today with Petro Poroshenko, outgoing President of Ukraine.

Following the call, Ms. Lagarde made the following statement:

“I thanked President Petro Poroshenko for the close cooperation during his presidency, during which Ukraine successfully returned to macro-stability and growth, following the deep economic crisis of 2014–15.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed on Friday the possibility of a new accord limiting nuclear arms that could eventually include China in what would be a major deal between the globe’s top three atomic powers.

Trump, speaking to reporters as he met in the Oval Office with Peter Pellegrini, prime minister of the Slovak Republic, also said he and Putin discussed efforts to persuade North Korea to give up nuclear weapons, the political discord in Venezuela, and Ukraine during a call that stretched over an hour.
