The European Court of Justice has decided that Austria's Supreme Court of Justice may continue proceedings into the case of Ukrainian businessman Dmytro Firtash, the news service TSN of the 1 Plus 1 TV channel has reported.
"The court decided today that the relevant Austrian regulations are compatible with the EU legislation. This means that, since the EU laws are adhered to in this case, the Supreme Court of Justice in Austria does not have to call for new hearings into the case of the people involved and, as a result, the Austrian authorities may continue their operations with regard to the crimes, which are suspected to have been committed in Switzerland," TSN reported, quoting the press secretary of the European Court of Justice as saying.
TSN said that after this court ruling the process of Firtash's extradition to the United States will most likely start.
As was reported earlier, the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg was scheduled on October 24 to make a decision on the request of May 4, 2017, which was being expected by the Supreme Court of Justice in Austria (Oberster Gerichtshof Österreichs) to pass a verdict in Firtash's appeal against his extradition to the United States.
