Remote notarization: authentication requirements, by US state

Remote online notarization allows a notary in one location to notarize a document when the signer is in a different location, including in a different state.
In 2011, Virginia became the first state to both recognize the legality of such notarizations and to create the regulatory framework to enable them. The next state to allow for remote online notarization was Montana, in 2015. Two more states – Nevada and Texas – passed laws in 2017. In 2018, the pace accelerated, with five states – Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Tennessee and Vermont – adopting remote notarization laws.
