NSDC approves 2017 defense budget at no less than 5% of GDP

The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) at its Tuesday meeting reviewed the defense budget for 2017, which would amount to over UAH 129 billion, the NSDC press service reported.

"Upon the review, the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers was tasked with ensuring the provision of funding for the defense and security sector in the framework of the 2017 state budget as provided for in the National Security Strategy at a level of no less than 5% of the country's GDP. According to the macroeconomic indicators, which have been approved by the government, this amount will reach over UAH 129 billion," the press service said.

During the meeting, a plan of measures to counter hybrid war threats, as well as main principles of the state policy on the prevention of threats to national sovereignty and the restoration of territorial integrity of Ukraine have been approved as a basis. The NSDC will meet again at the end of the week to consider adjustments to the state defence budget with a view of increasing the current year's spending on the security and defence sectors.
