Russia, as an aggressor country, should be punished for the breach of international law and territorial integrity of Ukraine, the aggression against the Ukrainian people President Petro Poroshenko underscores.
“The facts are evident for everyone: Russia is the aggressor that has violated the fundamental principles of the international law and should get fair and severe punishment for that. No propagandist bravado, for which they have been spending hundreds of millions, will help the Kremlin. The dozens of paid-up populist politicians gladly working for money calling white for black and black for white will not help either,” the Head of State said at the meeting with the Ukrainian diplomats.
Petro Poroshenko focused attention on the need to promote Ukrainian interests and Ukrainian agenda on the international arena by efforts of Ukrainian diplomatic representatives.
“The first and foremost task is to counteract the aggression. Restoring and protecting sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state. The international pressure on the aggressor should continue until Russia implements the Minsk agreements, takes away the occupational forces, transfers the border control to us, goes away from Crimea,” - said the President.
The Head of State accented on the threat of the conflict escalation that remains likely today, since Russia not only fails to meet its commitments, but also has been concentrating their troops under the pretext of exercises and building new military bases at the border with Ukraine, not to mention that they have been transforming the occupied Crimea into the all-over military base.
“I underscore that the Kremlin intentionally ignores the Minsk agreements, which are a key to the settlement of the situation in Donbas and an internationally recognized mechanism to restore Ukrainian sovereignty in the occupied territories,” Petro Poroshenko noted.
Nevertheless, Ukraine, jointly with its partners in the framework of the Normandy format – Germany, France – continues to put efforts into the peace plan implementation. According to the President, the negotiations give reasons to hope that despite any statements the Normandy format would be soon reanimated to stand up for and strengthen the sanctions against Russia until it stops its aggression completely.
“I strongly hope that our Western partners realize counter-productiveness and even the danger of the talks about any loosening or, God forbid, cancelling the sanctions with respect the aggressor – the Russian Federation. Flirting with the one defying the international law is the threat not to Ukraine. This is the threat to the global security,” the Head of Ukrainian state stressed.
Petro Poroshenko underscored Russia has destroyed the entire system of global world’s security with its annexation of Crimea and aggression in Donbas. “Let me remind you the main reason why the sanctions were imposed was not the violation of the Minsk agreements but the breach of international law and order, the Budapest Memorandum, the OSCE Final Act and the UN Charter,” President stated.
The Head of state also underscored the need to ensure international political and legal recognition and condemnation of the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, the occupation of Crimea, the mass violations of human rights by Russia in Donbas and in Crimea. Petro Poroshenko also called to strengthen support to the Ukraine’s position on the global level, especially, in the context of the forthcoming session of the UN General Assembly to start in several weeks.
“Ukraine should advance new initiatives seeking recognition and condemnation of the Russia’s crimes in Ukraine. Our non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council should be used as soon as possible to put the aggressor down,” the President said.
Ukraine has already filed with the European Court three claims against Russia relating to the annexation of Crimea and the conflict in Donbas and is preparing several more. Our state will also appeal to the UN International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea due to the violation by Russia of the relevant convention.
“We will be using every opportunity to bring the aggressor to trial. I rely on focused and systemic activities of the diplomatic service that should enable Ukraine to establish the criminal actions of the Russian Federation at the international level and to have the aggressor punished justly. I have no doubt that Russia will be imposed heavy political and financial liability for its crimes in other international courts as well,” Petro Poroshenko summarized.
The President also thanked Poland and President Andrzej Duda, who arrived to our country on a visit today, for continuous support to Ukraine in our European aspirations and our territorial integrity and independence.
The leader of Poland underscored that Poland had always been standing shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine in the most important moments in its history and has been acting consistently for approximation of Ukraine and the West supporting Ukraine on the European path. He also noted that the Polish-Ukrainian cooperation and close collaboration were and will be the guarantee of peace and security in this part of Europe.
Andrzej Duda also underscored the joint goal of Poland and Ukraine “to live in our common European home – the union of free peoples” and reassured that his country will always support Ukraine, its territorial integrity and independence, the integration of Ukraine into the European Union and NATO.
