President Petro Poroshenko had a meeting
with Acting Commander of the Naval Forces of Ukraine Lieutenant-General Ihor
Voronchenko.
“After consultations with the NSDC
Secretary, Minister of Defense and Chief of the General Staff, I have made a
decision to approve your candidacy. We give you some time to prove your best
qualities,” the President said.
The Head of State recalled the events of
2014 when General Ihor Voronchenko demonstrated courage and loyalty to military
oath during the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russian aggressors. He was
doing everything possible to save military equipment and withdraw his personnel
to the mainland.
The President emphasized that the Naval
Forces of Ukraine remained a priority for him as Supreme Commander-in-Chief. He
also highlighted the need for paying special attention to the sailors who
remained loyal to the military oath and left Crimea.
The President noted the importance of
restoring Odesa’s status of the “sea capital of Ukraine” and deploying the
headquarters of the Naval Forces in this city as soon as possible.
The Head of State informed the attendees
that in the course of his visit to Romania, he had discussed the Romanian
initiative to establish the NATO flotilla in the Black Sea. “We must ensure
peace in the Black Sea,” Petro Poroshenko said.
In his turn, Lieutenant-General Ihor
Voronchenko outlined the vision of his first actions and emphasized the need
for developing the Naval Forces of Ukraine in full compliance with NATO
standards.
The meeting was attended by NSDC
Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov, Minister of Defense Stepan Poltorak and Chief of
the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Viktor Muzhenko.
