The vote today in the Verkhovna Rada on the constitutional amendments
related to judiciary is an important step towards strengthening the judiciary,
improving its efficiency, safeguarding its independence and impartiality, and
combating corruption.
The EU looks forward to the swift adoption of these amendments in final
reading.
The process, carried out in 2015 through the Constitutional Commission and
relevant working groups, was inclusive. Civil society and experts were
consulted. We take good note that Ukrainian authorities sought the view of the
Venice Commission and took on board the major part of its recommendations.
Reforming the judiciary in line with European standards is a long-standing
commitment, which will contribute to the consolidation of the rule of law and
which is a key condition for the success of ongoing political and economic
reforms in Ukraine. This is of fundamental importance for the Ukrainian
people.
