On the Day of the National Flag and the Independence Day, the
Presidential Administration elaborated a series of festivities that will take
place all over the country involving the President, militaries, volunteers and
public figures.
As stated by Natalia Popovych, Advisor to the Head of the Presidential
Administration and co-founder of the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center, which
coordinated the elaboration of the festivities, the Independence Day and the
Day of the National Flag, acquire special meaning today, in one of the most
difficult periods of the Ukrainian history. "Our warriors die for the
independence of Ukraine. Simultaneously, the country undergoes tough
transformation of the post-Soviet society into the European one. People are
tired. Some of them are desperate and hopeless. But the majority of them keep
doing their best to develop the country. We want to support all these people
and demonstrate respect to them. Most of all, we wanted to realize the meaning
of independence for us - primordial aspiration of Ukrainians for freedom,"
Natalia Popovych emphasized at the briefing in the Presidential Administration.
On August 23, at 9:00, solemn hoisting of the National Flag by the
President will take place on St. Sophia's Square. Together with the President,
the flag will be raised by Myroslav Gai - former serviceman of the National
Guard, volunteer who was the first to fly the Ukrainian banner over the
occupied Sloviansk.
"Simultaneously, the flag will be hoisted over all state
administrations all over the country, as well as over all premises of the
Ukrainian diplomatic missions abroad," Deputy Head of the Presidential
Administration Rostyslav Pavlenko informed.
After the festivities, the President will open the exhibition
"Flags-Relics". Over 60 flags will be represented within the
exhibition: flags from the ATO area, flags of volunteers with emotional and
sincere wishes to the Ukrainian warriors, as well as flags from the National
Historical Museum.
"Every flag has its own story - true and sincere. The majority of
flags underwent fierce battles. They were raised over the regained Ukrainian
territories, Ukrainian warriors saved these flags from under the rubble risking
their lives. And these heroes will be present at the exhibition and tell their
stories," Natalia Popovych noted.
The exhibition will be open on August 23-25 from 11:00 to 20:00 on St.
Sophia's Square.
On Khreshchatyk and central squares of Kyiv, various activities for
children and adults will be held on August 23 at the initiative of Maryna
Poroshenko.
On the occasion of the Day of the National Flag, at the initiative of
the President of Ukraine, a series of social videos about the flag have been
produced. "The National Flag is now more than just a part of national
festivities, a decoration of a football section or a background for billboards
on the Independence Day. In recent years, the Ukrainian flag was at the
Revolution and war. It witnessed victories and defeats. It became an indicator
of allies and enemies. The best sons of our Homeland die under this flag.
Today, the National Flag is more than just a symbol for Ukrainians,"
Natalia Popovych said.
The videos have been made by the creative group under the leadership of
Olesia Drashkaba. "Today, refugee, volunteer or military are not abstract
images. Two years ago these words meant nothing for us. Today, the whole
country knows these heroes and associate themselves with these images. It was
very important for us to convey a simple atmosphere of tragedy or festivity,
but a moment of thoughtful reconsideration of the role of our flag,"
Olesia Drashkaba noted.
Videos are available on the official Youtube channel of the President of
Ukraine.
The Independence Day will begin with the March of Independence at 10:00.
Servicemen of the Armed Forces, the National Guard and other armed formations
will march on Khreshchatyk Street. Senior officials of the state will also take
part in the event.
At the end of the festivity, at 21:00, the world famous classical music
orchestra "I, culture orchestra" will have a concert on Maidan
Nezalezhnosti. "We are proud that 20 Ukrainian musicians play in this
orchestra, which is funded by the government of Poland. It is a successful art
demonstration of the Eastern Partnership policy," director of the event
Serhiy Proskurnia said.
