Ex-head of the Court of Appeal of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Valeriy Chornobuk has been detained in Kyiv. He is suspected of treason, was taken into custody, Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) Spokesman Andriy Lysenko has said.
"On November 5, at 9:00, Kyiv's Holosiyivsky District Court considered a petition to elect a preventive measure to former head of the Appeal Court of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Chornobuk. According to the results of the petition, a preventive measure was chosen in the form of detention," Lysenko wrote on Facebook on Monday.
As reported, Chornobuk was detained in Kyiv on November 3 by Ukraine's SBU Security Service officers. The ex-judge is suspected of committing crimes under Part 1 of Article 11 of Ukraine's Criminal Code (treason).
Chornobuk left the peninsula and went to work in the city of Dnipro after the annexation of Crimea at the end of March 2014. The self-proclaimed State Council of the Republic of Crimea included him in the list of persons who are prohibited from entering Crimea.
Kyiv's Holosiyivsky District Court remanded Chornobuk to pretrial detention.
Chornobuk was dismissed on September 29, 2016 from the post of judge of the Court of Appeal of Dnipropetrovsk region for violating the oath after the High Council of Justice submitted a relevant submission to the Verkhovna Rada. However, the PGO did not find signs of delict under the article on treason in the judge's statements.
