The revision of
the Global Accord between the EU and Mexico was at the centre point of a visit
by EU High Representative Federica Mogherini to Mexico City on 24-25 May.
During the visit
she held talks with President Enrique Peña Nieto, Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz
Massieu, Interior minister Angel Osorio Chomg, Attorney General Arely Gómez as
well as participating at the thirty-sixth session of the Economic Commission for
Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) with Alicia Barcena.
After meeting Ms
Ruiz Massieu, the High Representative told the press that the EU and Mexico
would in June commence negotiations on the new accord which would strengthen
the bilateral cooperation.
Mogherini
summarised the agreement saying: "The agreement we are going to negotiate
and upgrade is a global agreement, not only because Mexico and the EU are
important global actors and strong partners, but also because the scope of our
partnership is somehow global. It covers so many aspects and it is so important
for all our people that we perfectly understand that we need to bring it to
this century."
Trade and economic
exchanges for example: "More than 40% of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)
in Mexico comes from the European Union and we want to even increase
that." said Mogherini, "since the entry into force of the free trade
agreement, in 15 years, trade between the EU and Mexico increased over 230% and
EU investments reached $156bn USD tells you what we have already achieved under
the previous agreement."
The new text, she
went on, "will allow us to increase and deepen our cooperation in an even
more beneficial way for both the people of Mexico and the people of
Europe."
And on top of the
agenda of the bilateral cooperation there will human rights and rule of law,
Mogherini stressed "Human Rights, Rule of Law are a
fundamental part of our common work and our dialogue, and in our common action
in the world because we share a common global action for the promotion of Human
Rights", Mogherini insisted.
The EU, she said,
supported the continuing search and investigation into the kidnapping and
subsequent murder of 43 students in Iguala in 2014.
In her address to
the Eclac meeting, Mogherini insisted on the tight links and common agenda of
Europe and Latin America. "We share the same values, the same vision for a
more equal world. We share the vision of a more multilateral world, where all
continents and all peoples have a say, and contribute to global governance",
she said "in a more chaotic world, Europe and the Americas can be a
pole of attraction for stability, equality and sustainable growth. We can be
the engine of change, for a more just and equitable change".
