On April 22, General
of the Army of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak, Minister
of Defence of Ukraine, held talks with General Petr Pavel,
Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.
The head of the Ministry
of Defence of Ukraine told about the ongoing reforms and their
prospects within the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Armed
Forces of Ukraine.
Stepan Poltorak remarked
it was planned to improve the normative base of the defence
reforms and start the active phase of the reforms of the Ministry
of Defence of Ukraine. About 20% of structural units
of the MoD and GS are expected to be reorganized, the
J-structure will be implemented within the General Staff, AF, Navy and
Special Operations Forces will be reinforced.
“In 2017, we’ll
reform 80% of structural units of the Ministry of Defence
and 40% of the General Staff. The Joint Operations Staff and Commands
of Services of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will gain their operations
capabilities. In 2018, the reforms of the Ministry of Defence
will be completed, 90% of structural units of the General Staff
will be reorganized,” the Minister of Defence stressed.
According to the Defence
Minister, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be fully reformed
by the end of 2020. He proposed the NATO party to hold
meeting during which he would tell about the measures taken and the
prospects of the reforms within the Ministry of Defence
of Ukraine and Armed Forces of Ukraine.
General Petr Pavel,
Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, reaffirmed the NATO’s support
to the Ukrainian party. He underlined he was satisfied with the
reforms within the Ukrainian army.
“The NATO supports Ukraine, we have
common principles, values and complete discontent with the stance of the
Russian Federation. Please, follow your way. Your experience is valuable
for many nations,” Gen. Petr Pavel stressed.
