President Petro Poroshenko called today’s actions of the Verkhovna Rada on
building an independent court system historic. The Parliament approved
respective constitutional amendments in the first reading today.
The President commented on this event at the meeting with NB8 delegation
which is on a working visit to Ukraine.
The Head of State is hopeful that the final approval of the given draft law
would take place in the coming months. “This will allow making several
important steps – abolish judicial immunity and create an independent testing
system that will renew the judicial corps under the European rules,” Petro
Poroshenko said.
According to the President, 7.5 thousand judges, everyone without
exceptions, will pass the assessment procedure for the first time in the
history of Ukraine. This is an unprecedented decision that will help detect
corrupt and non-professional officials.
“This is a significant anti-corruption step in Ukraine. It will be hard to
talk about fighting corruption without fair and independent courts,” the
President said. He called this parliamentary decision a “very important step
for the completion of formation of specialized anti-corruption system” along
with the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption
Prosecution.
The Head of State underlined the importance of social trust in the judicial
power and recalled the increase of trust in the national police, which enjoys a
high level of confidence unlike militia.
