President signed Law “On Accession of Ukraine to the International
Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance”.
Law of Ukraine №525-VIII was adopted by Verkhovna Rada on June 17, 2015
pursuant to the initiative of the President. Having approved this law, the
Parliament agreed that Ukraine is bound to comply with the International
Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
The Convention defines widespread or systematic practice of enforced
disappearance a crime against humanity.
Under the Convention, each State Party shall take measures to ensure
that enforced disappearance constitutes an offence under its criminal law,
bring responsible for enforced disappearance to justice, establish its competence
to exercise jurisdiction over the offence of enforced disappearance, provide
the greatest measure of mutual legal assistance and ensure in its legal system
that the victims of enforced disappearance have the right to obtain reparation
and prompt, fair and adequate compensation.
The Convention was signed on December 20, 2006 in New York.
