Ukraine to apply for EU membership in five years – Poroshenko

Ukraine should ensure the effective implementation of the Association Agreement and to apply for membership in the EU in five years.

This has been stated by President Poroshenko at the 7th EU-Ukraine summit taking place in Kyiv.

"The prospect of Ukraine's membership in the EU is a key goal, for which the reforms are being conducted. This is a key goal in our strategy. We are ambitious in our plans and faith and that is why we state that during next five years we have to ensure the effective implementation of the Association Agreement and achieve the conditions necessary to apply for membership in the EU," he said.

The President has stressed that the European future depends on us, but given the difficult conditions, Ukraine needs substantial and consistent support of the EU.

"I urge the EU to recognize that Ukraine, like any other European state, may become an EU member in the future," Poroshenko said.
