Scythian gold: Ukraine or Russia

Ukraine became the side in the proceedings of belonging of Scythian gold.

This is stated in the decision of the District Court of Amsterdam released today.

The Court found it necessary to include Ukraine in the proceedings, "because the state claims rights to the disputed objects." Application of the Netherlands to participate in the proceedings was rejected, as the country has no direct bearing on the case, and its only interest is to ensure the proper application of the rules of international law.

According to the decision, until May 20, Ukraine should apply to the District Court of Amsterdam claim to participate in the proceedings.

History of the dispute.

In November 2014 four of the Crimean museum filed a lawsuit against the University of Amsterdam with the requirement to return a collection of about 2 thousand items. Exhibits are for decoration exhibition "Crimea: gold and secrets of the Black Sea", which is from February to August of last year took place in the Allard Pierson Museum, owned by the University of Amsterdam.


Uncertain situation with the collection came after the reunification of the Crimea with Russia. Their rights to artifacts that were taken away from the peninsula said both Russia and Ukraine. In this regard, the University of Amsterdam has suspended the procedure of transmitting values ​​to resolve the dispute on the legal basis or until the parties fail to reach a peace agreement.
