Ukrainian President orders creation of High Court on Intellectual Property in Kyiv

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed a decree on the creation of the High Court on Intellectual Property.

The respective decree, dated September 29, was posted on the website of the head of state on Saturday.

The Cabinet of Ministers was tasked with financing the activities related to the implementation of the decree.

In view of the legislative changes, the National Bank of Ukraine has developed a draft resolution of the NBU Board On Amendments to Some Regulations of the National Bank of Ukraine  (hereinafter – Draft Resolution).

The draft resolution has been developed taking into account the Law of Ukraine On Amendments to Some Legal Acts On Improving Corporate Governance in Joint-Stock Companies. The draft resolution,  inter alia, has:
- Introduced a new type of an account – an escrow account or an impound account;
- determined transactions that can be performed through an impound (escrow) account;
- provided for the foreclosure on collateral (mortgaged property) property rights on cash held in a bank account through forced debiting as per the payment request by the lien holder.

How Often Do Governmental Entities Win in Civil Cases?

Last week, we began our review of the Court’s experience with governmental entities.  This week, we’re evaluating governmental entities’ winning percentage.

Petitioners won 85.71% of their cases in 1994, 59.09% in 1995 and 100% in 1996.   Petitioners won 85.71% in 1997, 64.29% in 1998, 57.14% in 1999 and 71.43% in 2000.

In 2001, petitioners won 57.14% of the Court’s decisions.  Petitioners accounted for 88.89% in 2002 and 2004, and 80% in 2003.

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister: Poland will not accept refugees from Muslim countries

Poland will not accept refugees from the south, despite the promise made by the previous Polish government to do so, as stated by Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland, Jan Dziedziczak, rp.pl reports.

"The decision is binding, we will not accept refugees from Muslim countries. We, as the government, as politicians, simply implementing what our society wants from us, what we are obliged to do by our citizens," Dziedziczak said.

Ammunition depots in the town of Kalynivka in Vinnytsia region caught fire on Tuesday evening, which has been followed by explosions of bombs, shells and other types of ammunition, according to Vinnytsia Town Hall.

Ukrainian military prosecutors have concluded that the fire and explosions in ammunition depots near the village of Kalynivka were subversive activity, according a spokesperson for the SBU Security Service.

A joint group of Ministry of Defence and General Staff of Ukraine is on the scene.

Units of National Guard and National Police of Ukraine in cooperation with local authorities evacuate people from Kalynivka, Pavlivka, and Mizyaky, Vinnytsya oblast.

Firefighting tanks and vehicles are involved in the firefighting measures. The military unit is cut off electricity.

Saudi Arabia: King Salman orders driving licenses for women

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has issued a historic royal decree granting driving licenses for women in the kingdom as of next June.

The royal decree issued on Tuesday also ordered the establishment of a high-level committee of involving the ministries of internal affairs, finance, labor and social development. They will be tasked with studying the arrangements to enforce the new law.

EU commission says Spanish website seizures are legal

The European Commission has refused to defend free expression following a clamp down on pro-Catalan websites by the Spanish government.

Speaking to reporters in Brussels on Tuesday (26 September), the EU commission's chief spokesperson, Margaritis Schinas, said he had nothing to say on the matter other than "our respect for the legal and constitutional order" of member states.

Pechersky district court obliges Oschadbank to present information about Yanukovych's accounts

Kyiv's Pechersky district court has decided to demand information about funds placed on the accounts of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in Oschadbank as of November 10, 2016.

Yanukovych's defense lawyer Vitaliy Serdiuk posted a copy of the ruling issued on Tuesday on his Facebook page.
