President Petro Poroshenko has had a meeting with the security officials due to the drastic escalation of the security situation in the industrial area of Avdiivka, Donetsk region.

The President has instructed Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine Kostiantyn Yelisieiev to submit the issue of escalation in Avdiivka for consideration by the UN Security Council immediately. “Today, we expect respective statements by our international partners,” the Head of State noted.
“Given the actions of Russian militants, I would like to ask those talking about the abolition of sanctions: what else do we need to bring the aggressor to justice? For the first time in many days, massive artillery shelling from “Grad” has been carried out against civilians,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.
Due to the deployment of hostilities, the President has involved all international instruments to ensure the ceasefire regime. The Ukrainian party has addressed the OSCE; respective instructions have been given to the Ukrainian representatives in the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of the Ceasefire Issues and Stabilization of the Delimitation Line. The Trilateral Contact Group will organize negotiations today. Partners from the United States, European Union and NATO have also been informed of the escalation.
The meeting has addressed three main issues: security situation in the area of escalation; humanitarian situation and protection of civilians; international assistance and holding the Russian militants who initiated hostilities against the AFU and civilians accountable.
The President has informed the participants of the meeting on the results of his visit to Germany and underscored full support of the EU.
“After hearing the reports from the RSA Head, Minister of the Interior and Chief of the General Staff, I have decided to break short a visit to coordinate the plan of our actions personally,” the President said at the beginning of the meeting.
“First of all, I would like to calm everyone down,” Petro Poroshenko said. He particularly noted courage and professionalism of the Ukrainian military who decently rebuffed the enemy: “Our servicemen from the 72nd brigade and other units defend the positions brilliantly. They have no orders that forbid fire in response. They have every opportunity to defend themselves”. At the same time, the President emphasizes that the Ukrainian servicemen do not open fire in response when criminals, Russian militants place artillery systems, tanks and multiple launch rocket systems directly in residential areas of Donetsk and Yasynuvata.
According to the President, the Ukrainian authorities have got clear evidence of crimes of Russian militants.
The Head of State emphasized his personal control over the humanitarian situation in the area of Avdiivka: “At night I heard the report of the head of the emergency commission of the government, we coordinated actions with RSA Head Pavlo Zhebrivskyi”.
The President noted that sustainable ceasefire must be ensured for the beginning of the repair work. Electricity in Avdiivka has been supplied via four power transmission lines. Two of them have been damaged earlier. In the course of the recent hostilities the remaining lines have also been damaged.
“We are taking the entire complex of efforts to restore the electricity supply. According to the report of the RSA Head, maintenance crews are ready. As soon as the ceasefire creates an opportunity, they will set out to restore the electricity supply,” the President noted.
According to Petro Poroshenko, all measures have been taken to ensure heating of 153 apartment buildings and 3.5 thousand private houses.
“Pursuant to my instruction, servicemen have prepared everything from winter tents to field kitchen. The Government has provided power generators,” the President said adding that all conditions had been provided to ensure buses and evacuate people.
The President has also instructed the Minister of Defense and the Chief of the General Staff to prepare data and submit the names of the Ukrainian servicemen who had proved themselves in hostilities for the awards. The Head of State particularly noted the necessity of awarding the servicemen who had sacrificed life defending peace of Ukrainian citizens.
