High Representative Federica Mogherini met Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov

High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini had today, at the margins of the 70th United Nations General Assembly in New York, a bilateral meeting with the minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov.

The High Representative and Minister Lavrov spoke about a wide range of international and bilateral issues. On Syria and Libya, they shared the need to support the UN-led efforts for political solutions for both crises and to address the humanitarian aspects, including the urgency to manage the refugee and migrant flows. The High Representative updated Minister Lavrov on the EU naval operation against traffickers and smugglers of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea.


Federica Mogherini and the Russian Foreign Minister also exchanged views on the perspective of a renewed engagement for the Middle East Quartet that will meet tomorrow, and on the implementation of the Iranian nuclear deal.

HRVP Mogherini and Minister Lavrov discussed the situation in eastern Ukraine and the need to fully implement the Minsk Agreements, with a particular focus on local elections.
